The Hero of Dragon Quest IV is a 17-year-old (18 in the Nintendo DS remake) man or woman prophesied to defeat Psaro and save the world from the rising tide of Demons. As the only person able to wear the Zenithian Equipment, they are the only person in the world capable of doing this. To stop this from happening, Psaro and his minions attempt to eliminate the Hero before they can take up arms, but, fortunately, fail.
Uncommon in the Dragon Quest series, IV allows the player to choose their character's gender. The Hero's name is up to the player, a Dragon Quest staple, but the default names are Solo (ソロ) for the male and Sofia (ソフィア) for the female. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Hero of Dragon Quest IV has been given the default name Solo as well in order to differentiate him from the other three Heroes appearing in the game. Also, in the CD Theater audio drama, the hero is named Rei (レイ), and in the official novelizations his name is Yuuril (ユーリル).
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
On one starry night, an angel fell from the sky castle of Zenithia. She subsequently fell in love with a human woodcutter and, together, they produced a half-human, half-Zenithian child - the Hero. However, because this union was forbidden, the father was struck down by a bolt of lightning. After the child's birth, the angel returned to Zenithia and the woodcutter's father became bitter and lived in solitude. The Hero was then brought up by two loving foster parents in a small village near the Woodcutter's cabin, to be protected by the denizens of the settlement until the Hero came of age.
He or she grows up alongside his or her childhood friend, Eliza, and proceeds to train with a master swordsman regularly. However, the Hero's peaceful existence wasn't to last; eventually, Psaro's minions discovered the secretive village and assaulted it with the objective of assassinating the eighteen-year-old. They slaughtered all the villagers who stood in their way, including Eliza, who died while masquerading as the Hero with her transformation ability. Thinking that they had defeated the real Hero, the minions of Psaro left the ruins of the village. The Hero, after witnessing the savage ruins of his or her home, leaves on a journey to discover their true identity and save the world, embracing his or her destiny as the Hero.
During their travels, the Hero encounters the seven other 'Chosen' and they form a group to stop Psaro's evil plan to make use of the Secret of Evolution to destroy the world. The Hero and their companions go on a quest to retrieve all the pieces of legendary Zenithian Equipment which they then use to gain access to Zenithia Castle.
After a long journey and the final confrontation with Psaro, the Hero sees off their companions to their homes before returning to the desolated Hidden Valley. Looking around at the ruins of their home, the Hero hangs their head in despair before a golden light descends down from the heavens and revives Eliza. The two embrace, and are joined by the other Chosen who enter the valley.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
Several centuries after their death, the Order of Zugzwang hunted down and wiped out descendants of the Hero due to the fear that a new Legendary Hero could destroy Grandmaster Nimzo and his assets.
By the present time of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, only three descendants of the original Legendary Hero remained. One of them would marry the Hero and give birth to the new Legendary Hero who would set out to vanquish Grandmaster Nimzo.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]
Long before their birth, the Hero appears on Reaper's Peak if "the near future" option is chosen for the town's residents. Both the male and female versions appear individually. The male version appears alongside Eliza and is too engrossed with her to speak with the player, and the female version explains intricacies of the dreamsharing feature.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit]
The Hero is called Hero Solo and he appears as a S-rank member of the Hero family as part of the limited True Dragon Quest IV event, appearing on his own banner alongside Hell raiser.

Other appearances[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
The Hero of IV, under the name Solo, appears as one of four Heroes, alongside the Heroes of XI, III, and VIII. He wields the Zenithian helm, the Zenithian sword, and the Zenithian shield. Just like in his post-Famicom era artwork, he is also seen wearing a Slime earring on his left ear. While playing as the Hero in Classic Mode, Solo appears as Round 3's opponent and is fought at Temple.
Trivia[edit]
- In V, the Hero is primarily remembered for vanquishing Estark rather than Psaro or Aamon. This may be to avoid establishing either of the two possible endings of IV as "the canonical one".
- Similar to Erdrick, any references to the Hero in V are gender-neutral.
- Both of the Hero's voice actors have provided the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. Jun'ichi Kanemaru started voicing the character in 1998, beginning with Sonic Adventure, while Takeshi Kusao voiced the character in various arcade games in 1993 through 1996.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Round 3 of the Hero's Classic Mode route is against the Hero from IV, fought on Temple. This may be a reference to Zenithia, an important location in the Dragon Quest series, as both are floating castles.
- The Heroes of IV are seen wearing the Slime earrings in their artwork starting with the PlayStation remake of IV. Depending on the artist, the male hero either wears the earrings in both ears or only one of them. Despite this, the slime earrings themselves don't actually appear as an accessory in any version of IV. They also do not wear this accessory in any of their Famicom era artwork, presumably because the accessory itself didn't exist at that time.
