Alltrades Abbey (Temple of Dhama) is a recurring location in the Dragon Quest series. It is represented as an abbey, church, or temple where characters can change their class/vocation. It usually appears early to midway through the games in which it appears. Since its primary purpose is vocation-related, it does not appear in Dragon Quest games that do not possess a vocation system.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III

Any generic character that has reached at least level 20 may change their class to any other available class. The sage class is generally unavailable unless the character is a Goof-off or in possession of a Book of Satori. This causes the character to drop back to level 1 and lose half of their current stats, though any magic or skills they obtain are kept. The hero cannot change class.

Dragon Quest VI

For details, see main article Alltrades Abbey (Dragon Quest VI)

The temple has been placed under a seal by the Demon Lord Murdaw. Once the temple has been unsealed, it is possible to change a character's class, which modifies that character's stats and allows them to learn additional skills and magic. Only a few classes are available at the start, but mastering certain combinations of classes will unlock more powerful classes. Two secret classes are only available by the use of special magic books, and any character other than the Hero can only change to the "Hero" class by mastering all other nonsecret classes in the game.

Dragon Quest VII

Once the temple has been cleansed of its demonic presence, it is possible to change a character's class, which modifies that character's stats and allows them to learn additional skills and magic. Only a few classes are available at the start, but mastering certain combinations of classes will unlock more powerful classes. Monster classes can be unlocked by obtaining a heart of that creature, with advanced monster classes also being unlockable in the same manner as the other advanced classes.

Dragon Quest IX

For details, see main article Alltrades Abbey (Dragon Quest IX)

In Dragon Quest IX, the Temple of Dharma is a location that acts the same as its prior versions. In the English version, it's name was changed to Alltrades Abbey.

Trivia

Dharma is an Indian spiritual and religious term, meaning one's righteous duty or any virtuous path in the common sense of the term, an appropriate name for a place of signifigant change.
