The Ultimate Key is a recurring magical item that can change its appearance to fit any possible lock, as opposed to the Magic Key which can only undo magical seals on doors and the Thief's Key being designed to break simple locks. It is necessary to advance the later stages of a game's story, usually by opening a jail door.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit]
The Ultimate Key is dropped by Spiketail following its defeat in Kol. It is required to access the towers of the Shrine of Rain. This game introduces locked chests that can only be opened with certain keys. The Ultimate Key can open grey-colored chests and doors.
Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]
The Ultimate Key is given to the Scions of Erdrick by the priest in the Rendarak Shrine. As with the previous game, certain chests are locked unless the player has the correct key to open them.
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]
The Ultimate Keyis found at the Shallows Shrine, which requires a mini-quest to be completed in order to enter the shrine.
Location[edit]
Acquiring the Ultimate Key is one of the first major tasks the player must accomplish after receiving the ship in Portoga. It requires visiting at least 2 separate locations.
Lanson[edit]
The village has an item shop which sells Fading Jennys. These herbs turn the Hero's party invisible for a short amount of time. An herb needs to be purchased here, or otherwise the party must grind a Mage or Sage to Lv33 to learn Fade as an alternative.
Edina[edit]
The castle is guarded so that outsiders may not enter by normal means. By using a Fading Jenny or the Fade spell, the Hero's party can sneak by the sentries guarding the entrance. Inside, there is a boulder puzzle located on the second floor which must be solved. The player must push three boulders around water hazards into a straight line on the north wall. After successfully completing the puzzle, the Hero is rewarded with the Bottomless Pot.
North Central Sea and Final Key Shrine[edit]
In the north central sea (just north of where the two peninsula cross each other), there is a small grouping of shoals in a 'T' pattern. By guiding the ship adjacent to the south center shoal, the Hero can use the Bottomless Pot to raise the Shallows Shrine. Inside the shrine, the final key is located inside a chest.
